Winter riding can be a bit tricky, and somewhat of a chore, but we want to make sure you’re safe, warm and fully prepared for what Old Man Winter may throw at you. We asked ourselves: what are the necessities for winter riding, first, and, what are some new ‘must haves’ for commuting, training and riding in the Minnesota winter months. Here’s the short list, along with some of the shop employee favorites, in no particular order:
1) Get Lit!! Of course we mean literally, lights are a must for winter riding, not just night riding. Being seen is extremely important for safety for both you and motorists on the road.
— NiteRider 650 – USB rechargeable, super bright, and ultra lightweight.
— NiteRider Cherry Bomb – seatpost mounted red flashy lighting goodness.
— Lazer 02 Flash Yellow helmet – makes your head glow (not really, but kind of really).
— Giro Savant Flash Yellow helmet – also a head glowing type deal (but really, not really).
— Serfas Seatstay taillight – Bright white LED’s and a super flashy red LED for safety.
2) Stay Warm! If you’re going to brave the winter cold, you may as well be comfortable doing so. Having the proper winter gear and layering is a necessity, and a good idea
— Gore Phantom Jacket – with Windstopper technology
— Gore Racepower III Overshoe – check out the fleece lined covers for extra warmth
— Craft Thermal Gloves – lobster claw or 5-finger style
— Craft Storm Bib Tights – keep warm and aero for the winter months
— Craft baselayer – staying active or staying warm, you get to choose your baselayer
3) Extra items to maintain the extra warmth on those really cold days.
— Sugoi Balclava face mask – if everything else is warm, but your face is cold..no good
— Bar Mitts – these are for the serious commuter
— Gore Path Jacket – extra super warm fullblown lined jacket, for anytime it’s cold on or off the bike.
Not exactly sure what else you may need? Feel free to stop in and check out our inventory and start preparing for spring as well (yep, it’s coming).
