Gear West Duathlon a steamy success

Regular participants of the Gear West Duathlon are used to bundling up race morning and racing in gloves and arm warmers.   Well, that was definitely not the case for the 2010 version of the Gear West Duathlon.   Participants were greeted race morning with temps in the mid 70s and the air was thick with humidity.   Regardless, times were fast and the competition was fierce.

Setting up in transition, racers were greeted with a Toyota Corolla. No, this is not a new racing division, it was just a car left from the night before.

The winner of the men’s race, leading from start to finish was no surprise with DKT (aka David Thompson) finishing with the fastest split for both runs and the bike.

One person causing many of the men’s elite racers to do a double take was Hans Arneson, who did the bike portion of the winning relay. Arneson rode the fastest bike split ever recorded at the duathlon: 37:34… averaging 27.2 mph over the challenging 28K course. We were just glad that he chose to wear a really good looking skinsuit:)

Taking the lead within the first mile of the bike and never relinquishing was 3 time winner Cathy Yndestad.

In the end everyone was dripping wet with sweat, but the running course stayed dry.

  1. The competitive men are so fast because none of them touch the ground! 😉 Great pic!

Yeah, Matt and I (Team Happy Pants) didn’t stand a chance against any team with Hans as their biker! Holy cats….

  2. It was a great race, as usual. Thanks to everyone at Gear West who put the race on and the great volunteers.

  3. Oh to see the face of the Corolla owner when he/she discovered a nice coating of number stickers!! Excellent race, as always. I echo the appreciation to the volunteers and everyone else who put it together.
